Twitch will ban selected forms of gambling from next month

  • The decision comes after a chaotic week of drama and revelations on Twitch.
  • The ban on streaming certain gambling-related content will take effect from 18th October.
  • It will prohibit content from gambling sites that involve slots, roulette or dice games.

The past two weeks have proved quite chaotic over at Twitch, with serious allegations being levelled against some creators and others being banned for fairly innocuous infractions. The latest piece of news out of the live streaming platform is an upcoming ban of gambling on Twitch.

This divisive issue came to the fore after it was revealed that popular creator ItsSliker had scammed many of his subscribers and several other creators on the platform in order to fund a gambling addition, with the an amount of $300 000 being bandied about.

ItsSliker has since come forward explaining his addiction, which began with in-game skins and quickly evolved into sports betting. While it remains to be seen what action will be taken against him, in the days following the allegations and revelations, #TwitchStopGambling has been trending on parts of Twitter.

Twitch has seemingly heeded the call and has confirmed that it will indeed be banning certain forms of gambling on its platform from next month.

The company tweeted out that it would be updating its policy and ban selected forms of gambling on its platform from 18th October. It is still refining what the new policy will be, but in the interim has noted that streaming of gambling sites that involve slots, roulette or dice games will be prohibited.

The statement also highlighted that gambling sites that aren’t licensed in the US or other jurisdictions will be prohibited too, citing the likes of Stake.com, Rollbit.com, Duelbits.com and Roobet.com specifically. Twitch says the list of prohibited sites could grow in future as well.

With the platform noting that its rules on promoting gambling have been circumvented in the past, it will indeed be interesting to see just how well Twitch can police this upcoming policy change.

Given that the platform’s more recent track record leaves a lot to be desired, with examples of creators live streaming sex and only getting a seven-day ban, not leaving us with much confidence.

With the drama at Twitch showing no signs of slowing down over the coming weeks, this is certainly not the last time that gambling will be a hotly debated topic on the platform.
