Eskom moves to Stage 3 loadshedding at 05:00 Thursday

  • Eskom will lower loadshedding to Stage 3 at 05:00 on Thursday morning.
  • Generating units at three power stations were taken offline for repairs.
  • Eskom group chief executive officer Andre de Ruyter has promised that loadshedding will be cut back within 10 days.

Following an urgent move to Stage 4 loadshedding on Tuesday evening, Eskom has announced that it will only downgrade power cuts on to Stage 3 on Thursday morning.

This means that Stage 4 loadshedding will remain in place until 05:00 on Thursday at which point loadshedding will be downgraded to Stage 3 until 05:00 on Saturday.

The utility said it would provide an update regarding the rest of the weekend on Friday afternoon.

“A generating unit each at Hendrina, Kendal and Majuba power stations were taken offline for repairs,” Eskom said in a power alert on Wednesday afternoon.

“Furthermore, the delay in returning a generating unit each to service at Kendal, Komati and Tutuka power stations have added to the capacity constraints,” the utility continued.

The good news is that a generating unit each at Arnot, Kriel, Lethabo, Matla and Camden power stations have returned to service since Tuesday evening.

As of time of writing, 6 647MW of capacity is unavailable due to planned maintenance while breakdowns mean 14 692MW of capacity is unavailable.

With promises made by Eskom Group chief executive officer Andre de Ruyter that loadshedding will be cut back in 10 days, the ball is now in Eskom’s court to deliver on that promise.
