10 million deliverymen: Death Stranding crosses player threshold

  • Kojima Productions has shared news of a milestone for Death Stranding.
  • More than 10 million players have experienced the game, according to the company.
  • This includes all versions of the game across all platforms, including “free access”.

The latest game from Hideo Kojima, Death Stranding, has just crossed a notable number as Kojima Productions reports that 10 million players have experienced the game.

This includes outright purchases of the game across the original PlayStation 4 version, the PlayStation 5 port and the PC variant too. It also includes “free access” through subscription services Game Pass and PlayStation Plus.

Kojima Productions has made this announcement to coincide with the third anniversary of the game, which originally launched on 8th November 2019.

“The original game, Death Stranding, was released by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4 on November 8th, 2019 and by 505 Games for PC on July 14th, 2020. The Director’s Cut launched on September 24th, 2021, enhancing the Death Stranding experience by offering players more character action, expanded areas, extended storylines through new missions and a unique Social Strand System that enables players to stay connected with each other around the globe through in-game actions, including donating valuable resources to rebuild structures. The Director’s Cut is the definitive experience and is currently available on PlayStation 5 and PC,” the announcement of the 10 million number reads.

That original release as well as subsequent ports and the Director’s Cut have all cemented Death Stranding as a Marmite game which is either loved or hated with little middle ground.

This may be due to the fact that this is, if you believe Hideo Kojima, the very first in a new genre of “strand-type” games, or for various other reasons such as its divisive writing, weird characters, stilted gameplay and more.

As for where the game goes from here, who can say? While Kojima Productions celebrates in its office with some cake, there’s also the #DS_3rd hashtag which is being used by the company and community to share memories from these past few years of Death Stranding.
