Gold, Grey and Blue check marks coming to Twitter next week

  • The chaos continues at Twitter, with previously banned accounts receiving amnesty from Elon Musk.
  • After a failed attempt to launch its new verification system, now Twitter is preparing to roll out different colour check marks next week.
  • Accounts wanting to be verified will also have to do so manually too.

Elon Musk and his plans to revamp verification on Twitter have not gone well to date. After a failed attempt to “relaunch” its check marks a couple of weeks ago, the social media platform is planning to do so once again.

This after Musk replied to a query on Twitter earlier today confirming that its new verified system is currently earmarked to roll out next week Friday – 2nd December 2022. There has been much discourse over accounts being able to mimic or parody real people, which is part of the reason why Musk decided to nix the aforementioned first attempt, but now he believes different colour check marks should solve this problem.

To that end, there are currently three colours on the way – Gold, Grey and Blue. The Blue one will apply to people, whether they are celebrities or not, but the Gold is for companies and brands, while the Grey option is for governments. Precisely where media, publishers or technology websites like our own fall in this mix remains unclear, but as has been the case in recent weeks, Elon Musk seems content to push ahead with plans as he sees fit.

Along with the different colours for check marks, Musk confirmed that manual verifications will need to happen before the rollout happens. As we have seen in past attempts by Twitter before Musk came onboard, this process has proved difficult for many, especially organisations and publications.

As for the re-priced Twitter Blue program, that is still set to spin up again on 29th November at $8 per subscription, although it is still unclear how many regions it will be available.

The Chief Twit says a full explanation of his plans is in the offing, but with official Twitter communications persona non grata at the moment, it is becoming increasingly difficult to track the comings and goings at the company.
