Scholarships worth R5 million for adult learners available from UCT Online High School

  • The UCT Online High School opened for its first academic year at the beginning of 2022.
  • Now it is looking to spin up the UCT Online High School Adult Matric Scholarship Programme.
  • It will offer R5 million in scholarships to the first 500 eligible adult learners that apply.

At the beginning of 2022, the UCT Online High School kicked off its first full academic year, with the institution pushing ahead with its distance learning initiative. While it remains to be seen how successful it has been, UCT is looking to spin up its Adult Matric Scholarship Programme, which is aiming to offer R5 million in scholarships to local adult learners.

More specifically its scholarship programme supports eligible adult learners by providing the opportunity to study towards a CAPS-aligned Amended Senior Certificate (ASC), at a more affordable cost than doing so in the traditional manner.

To that end, the UCT Online High School is offering scholarships to the first 500 eligible adult learners.

“The primary objective of the UCT Online High School Adult Matric Scholarship Programme is to make high-quality education affordable and accessible to adult learners who deserve a second chance at completing their matric,” the institution explained in a press release sent to Hypertext.

It should be noted, however, that these scholarships are not completely free, with 30 percent tuition needing to be covered by the adult learner, provided they meet the criteria laid out by UCT.

Added to this, is the fact that this qualification is achieved over a period of 18 months, with it only available to the first 500 people, so spots will be going fast.

“Education should not be a privilege, it is a basic human right, and our Adult Matric programme means hope and a second chance towards a better future through the opportunities that come with having a matric qualification in South Africa,” added Sipho Mpisane (pictured above), head of School for Adult Matric.

“We’re incredibly excited to announce the UCT Online High School Adult Matric Scholarship programme which will support eligible adult learners by providing the opportunity to study towards an Amended Senior Certificate at a fraction of the regular cost! We are proud to unlock this door and even more proud of those who will choose to step in and walk boldly through towards a better future,” he continued.
