Siyavula names top SA schools in #1MillionMaths challenge

  • Siyavula has named the top schools for both its #1MillionMaths Mathematics and Physical Science.
  • As many as 4.3 million questions were answered on the Siyavula platform throughout September.
  • The 2022 #1MillionMaths challenge was hosted in partnership with MTN and UNICEF.

Last month the Siyavula #1MillionMaths challenge, in partnership with MTN and UNICEF wrapped.

The challenge is hosted every year and aims to help Grade 10, 11, and 12 learners prepare for their end of year exams. The challenge encourages regular and sustained practice in Mathematics.

Over September, when the challenge was being held, Siyavula saw 4.3 million questions answered on its platform. Through the platform learners are able to master and understand the concepts associated with Mathematics and Physical Science.

The top schools in the #1MillionMaths Mathematics challenge for 2022 were:

  • Curtis Nkondo ICT School in Soweto,
  • Sihayo High School in KwaZulu-Natal,
  • Stanza Bopape Secondary in Pretoria.

The top schools in the #1MillionMaths Physical Science Challenge were:

  • Greenfields Secondary in Katlehong,
  • Curro Academy in Soshanguve,
  • Prestige College Hammanskraal.

“We know that achieving good results in STEM subjects opens doors for learners to further education and exciting, in-demand career opportunities, and we are extremely proud of the work that Siyavula is doing for young South Africans,” said general manager for the MTN SA Foundation, Kusile Mtunzi-Hairwadzi.

Not only does Siyavula provide a free-to-use and zero-rated service, it also prints “open textbooks”. These textbooks are free to access and are licensed under a Creative Commons Non-Derivative license. This means you are free to share the material, but if you remix, transform or build upon the work, you can’t use the material. You must also credit Siyavula if you do share this content.

Siyavula also helps teachers get a better idea of how their learners are performing. This brings data analysis into the classroom helping teachers do the best job they can do.

“It’s so encouraging to watch hundreds of thousands of learners across South Africa flock to the platform annually, all in an effort to better themselves. It’s been a much-deserved record breaking year for Siyavula, and all as result of the commitment they put into doing whatever it takes for South Africans learners to succeed,” concludes Mtunzi-Hairwadzi.
