You won’t need rain to access NVIDIA GeForce NOW in SA

  • rain has clarified that South Africans hoping to stream video games won’t need to be rain customers.
  • There is no word on pricing just yet.
  • NVIDIA recommends you have internet speeds of at least 15Mbps to play games at 720p.

Earlier today we reported that rain would be bringing NVIDIA GeForce Now to South Africa in 2023.

We had a few questions for the internet service provider (ISP) regarding this announcement including the cost, how folks would access it, and more.

Unfortunately we don’t have word on a price yet with rain prompting Hypertext to fill in its interest from on the rain website for up-to-date information as it is dispersed.

Now for the real surprise, NVIDIA GeForce NOW won’t be exclusive to rain. We had hoped this would be the case, but we weren’t certain.

“The service will not be limited to rain customers. Anyone will be able to subscribe to the GeForce NOW service through rain. With GeForce NOW and rain all you will need is a screen, compatible controllers, and the internet to stream the latest games,” the internet service provider told Hypertext in an email.

In truth, restricting access to GeForce NOW would have been tricky and likely would have caused backlash. On social media there is a complaint regarding rain seemingly every hour. Looking at HelloPeter, rain’s rating from 15 294 reviews in 1.45 stars out of 5.

The fact that you will be able to access GeForce NOW through your ISP of choice is fantastic news.

With that in mind, what internet connection would you need to stream games on NVIDIA’s platform?

The firm recommends that subscribers have at least a 15Mbps for 720p gaming and 25Mbops for 1080p gaming. In addition, the firm recommends a ping of less than 40ms to an NVIDIA data centre. This is where some users might run into trouble as we aren’t entirely sure where rain’s data centre is based and this could have an effect on latency depending on where you are based.

You can read more about specific hardware requirements depending on what you plan on using to stream your games here.

Remember to head to the rain website to express your interest ahead of the limited beta launching in 2023.
