God of War series coming to Prime Video

  • Amazon has ordered a series based on PlayStation’s God of War video games.
  • The series will be helmed by Rafe Judkins, who previously developed the high fantasy series Wheel of Time for Amazon.
  • God of War will join HBO’s The Last of Us series as another Sony exclusive coming to the small screen.

With the gold rush to streaming services, popular IPs are being scooped up wherever they can be found in order to offer something different from the myriad of competitors and make somewhat of an impact.

Amazon has been a prime example of this, no pun intended. Its Amazon Prime Video service scooped up the Lord of the Rings IP to launch The Rings of Power earlier this year, the most expensive TV series ever made.

It is also working on a live-action series based on the Fallout video game universe, helmed by the creators of Westworld. We saw a glimpse of what that show will look like in October, and eagerly await a trailer.

Now, the streamer is looking into another super-popular gaming universe and has reportedly ordered a TV series based on the God of War series of games from Santa Monica Studios.

There have been rumblings that a series was in the ether for some time and that the idea would make perfect sense since the last two games, namely God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok (read our review) were distinct cinematic experiences.

Reportedly, Amazon has been throwing around the idea since March of doing something with the IP. On Wednesday it revealed that it had ordered a series of the PlayStation exclusive for its Prime service, with Rafe Judkins serving as showrunner.

Judkins previously steered the ship for Wheel of Time, another Amazon Prime series focused around a high fantasy universe starring Rosemund Pike. The series received middling reviews.

It will be a difficult task for Judkins to bring Kratos to the small screen. The developer doesn’t have too many credits under his name for such a major project, other than writing for a few seasons of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD and the 2022 Uncharted film, among a few other smaller projects.

There is no information yet on what Santa Monica’s involvement would be, but it would be a mistake for Judkins to not lean on the likes of Cory Barlog, longtime God of War games director, for added authenticity.

It is believed that the Amazon God of War series will follow the events of the latest two games, and will see Kratos and his son Atreus travel through a mystical Norse world. These games were highlighted by their storytelling, compared to the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 God of War games, which were more about their action and gameplay – not that they lacked memorable story beats.

If Judkins is able to capture the magic of God of War, then Amazon will have another hit on their hands as God of War Ragnarok popularity alone, Sony’s fastest-selling first-party game ever, will bring eyes to the series.

Sony seems keen on expanding the media of its exclusive games, with the first episode of The Last of Us’ own HBO series expected early next year. The only thing we want to know is: Who’s up for making a TV show about Bloodborne next?
