Huawei Mate 50 Pro launches in South Africa

  • Huawei has launched its latest flagship phone, the Mate 50 Pro, in South Africa.
  • The new phone is already up for pre-order, and officially goes on sale on 1st February.
  • The Huawei Mate 50 Pro carries a recommended price tag of R24 999.

The first week of February is shaping up to be a busy week when it comes to locally available smartphones, as Huawei will make its latest flagship phone ready to purchase. The Mate 50 Pro is the device in question, which Huawei unveiled globally in September last year, and this evening revealed for South African audiences.

The Mate 50 Pro is already up for pre-order, with a R1 000 deposit on the Huawei online store securing your device, which retails for a recommended R24 999. To sweeten the pre-order offer, as it often does, Huawei has also bundled a Watch GT Runner for free.

As we noted last year, the Mate 50 Pro is shipping sans support for 5G, which is important to note for consumers interested in the best connectivity currently available. As is the fact that Google apps are not natively supported, which has been the case on new Huawei phones for a few years now, but always worth mentioning.

Moving onto the other elements of the Mate 50 Pro and it is packing some impressive technology.

Starting with the rear camera array, which features a circular housing in keeping with the Mate series design, and a trio of lenses are present – 50MP primary, 13MP ultra-wide, and 64MP telephoto. Up front a pair of lenses are present, with a 13MP ultra-wide and depth-sensing option on hand.

Sticking up front, a 6.74″ OLED display (2616×1212) is present, with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Looking at the internals, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset is present, although this is only the 4G version. Added to this is 8GB RAM, along with either 256GB or 512GB onboard storage options. Lastly a 4 700mAh battery is present, with support for 66W wired fast charging and 50W wireless.

By all measures then, this looks a solid flagship phone, but it remains to be seen how the lack of 5G, as well as Google app workarounds, will affect local uptake of this latest device from Huawei.
