Matric results to be released on schedule despite cheating allegations

  • The Department of Basic Education (DBE) says that all systems are go for matric exam results to be released on the pre-set date of 20th January 2023.
  • This is despite a probe it launched into scandalous cheating allegations involving teachers and students late last year.
  • While the department is still processing the exams, it urges learners to head to the institutes where they wrote their exams to receive their results on the day.

Last year, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) set 20th January 2023 as the date for the release of the 2022 matric exam results, with the final exams of the year written in December last year.

Despite allegations levied at a group of teachers and students in Mpumalanga for using WhatsApp to cheat on certain exams last year, the department has said today that everything is currently on track to meet the 20th January release date.

There were some fears that after the conclusion of the department’s probe into the matter, the results release date could be moved, or that some learners would have their results withheld.

No new information about the alleged scandal has been published by the department, and it seems to be going forward with the release of the marks. As such, the government body has also outlined other important dates for matrics new and old to take not of.

These are namely, the last day students can apply for remarking/rechecking (3rd February), the last date to register for June exams (8th February) and the last day to register for November exams (15th March).

With that being said, the department indicates that it is still processing the marks from the exams, about 10 days shy of the date. It is urging students to collect their results “at the centre where [they] sat for the 2022 National Senior Certificate examinations,” according to SA News.

But this is just one method to find your matric results. In fact, the most convenient methods are all online and can be accessed through a smartphone or PC.

The first, and simplest is to head to the department’s official website, specifically the examination results page here. There you can input your exam number, and you should be redirected to your results.

As former matrics expect their results, the rest of South Africa’s basic education learners prepare to head into the new academic year on Wednesday 11th January in Gauteng, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the North West.

Learners in the Eastern, Northern, and Western Capes, and KwaZulu-Natal will begin on Wednesday 18th January.
