Samsung may tackle hinge crease with Galaxy Z Fold5

  • While Samsung has continued to pursue the development of foldable phones, the crease on displays remains an issue.
  • So much so that Samsung may need to redesign the hinge on its foldable phones in order to address it.
  • According to reports the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold5 will be the first to feature this new hinge.

In recent years Samsung has held firm as the main manufacturer of foldable phones, with the South Korean company now a few iterations deep into its Galaxy Z offerings. While these devices are impressive feats of engineering in their own right, the crease on their displays remains an eyesore.

That could change, however, with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold5.

According to South Korean outlet Naver, a new hinge may solve the crease issue. To that end, a new droplet-style hinge may be utilised, which is said to yield a far less noticeable crease. How this would compare to some of the Samsung foldables we have reviewed in the past, such as the Z Fold3, remains to be seen.

As The Verge points out, such a design would place the display at a more forgiving angle when the phone is folded up. This is similar to what Oppo has done with its Find N2 and Lenovo with the third-generation Motorola Razr.

With Samsung having already patented the teardrop hinge design back in 2016, it is unclear why the company has not integrated it into one of its foldables to date, but that may also have to do with the flexible display technology it is refining with each passing year.

Perhaps now the company has a display capable of handling the teardrop hinge? We will have to wait to see whether this conjecture is indeed accurate closer to the release of the next series of Samsung foldables.

The company has an Unpacked event scheduled for 1st February, but the Galaxy Z Fold5 is not expected. That said, Samsung may choose to surprise its fans with an early unveiling.
