The new games coming to PS Plus this month

  • Along with “free” titles offered by PlayStation this month, a host of games have been added to Sony’s PS Plus catalogue.
  • Dragon Ball FighterZ, Just Cause 4 and Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition are just some of the games highlighting this latest addition.
  • These games will be available from 17th January for subscribers to PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium.

January 2023 opened with some underwhelming “free” titles for PlayStation (PS) Plus subscribers.

While Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a bright spot, the inclusion of Fallout 76 (a game we said no one should ever play) and little-known nostalgia-fueled Metroidvania Axiom Verge 2 dragged down the offering this month.

However, on Wednesday Sony announced the new games to be added to the catalogues and there are two titles that caught our attention. These games will be available to download and play to anyone who is subscribing to the PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium tiers.

The new games coming to PS Plus from 17th January include:

Dragon Ball FighterZ (PS4)

Arc System Works does magic with their fighting games, and fans of Dragon Ball Z desperately need to check out Dragon Ball FighterZ. Here you can fight as and against iconic characters from the franchise in three-on-three team battles.

Take on Frieza, Cell and Majin Buu as Goku, Gohan and Vegeta and bathe in the flashing explosions, addictive gameplay and classic voice work that takes you right into the show’s most memorable fights.

There are 21 characters in total from Gogeta to Master Roshi, and even some all-new characters like Android 21. The story mode includes a never-before-seen scenario, says Sony in an official blog post, which was created under the watchful eye of Akira Toriyama himself.

Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition (PS5/PS4)

Another fantastic offering coming to PS Plus this month is the special edition of Devil May Cry 5. The proper sequel to Capcom’s Devil May Cry series was critically acclaimed when it launched in 2019.

The Special Edition features updated next-gen graphics with included ray tracing, enhanced 3D audio and new gameplay modes like Turbo Mode, and Legendary Dark Knight Mode.

Devil May Cry 5 sees you take up Capcom’s famously stylish action gameplay as Dane, Nero and V, in order to save the world from a new demonic threat.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm and Life is Strange

Available for PS4 players are the award-winning adventure game Life is Strange and its sequel, standalone adventure, Life is Strange: Before the Storm.

In Life is Strange, you play as Max Caulfield, a photography senior who discovers she has powers over time while saving her best friend Chloe Price.

The two soon become embroiled in a mystery to discover the fate of fellow student Rachel Amber, encountering the dark underbelly of their hometown in the process.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm sees you play through a unique journey with Chloe Price. One that explores her relationship with her family demons and unlikely friend Rachel Amber.

Just Cause 4: Reloaded (PS4)

Over-the-top action in a huge open world is the theme of the day for the fourth edition of Just Cause. Choose from a wide selection of weapons, vehicles and gear.

This game is all about doing whatever you want, whenever you want. Fly on helicopters and shoot down planes. There are virtually no limits to Rico Rodriguez in his quest to destroy the Black Hand.

Other games included this month are co-op first-person shooter Back 4 Blood, the spiritual successor of Left 4 Dead from the same creators. Cinematic action-adventure Jett: The Far Shore also joins the line-up. In this title, the player takes control of Mei, a scout that embarks on a laid-back mission of exploration.

This month’s additions are rounded out by cutesie puzzler Omno, and interactive live-action thriller Erica.
