Nissan showcasing its Formula E car ahead of Cape Town race

  • Nissan has announced a South African roadshow for its Formula E car, which is currently competing in this year’s E-Prix championship.
  • The Japanese company confirms that the car will make its way to all of SA’s major cities.
  • The final showing will be in Cape Town, ahead of that Championship, which is happening on 25th February.

The ABB FIA Formula-E World Championship is heading to Cape Town for the first time later this month, with drivers set to compete in the City Bowl on 25th February. A number of race teams are set to descend on the South African city, but the Japanese outfit from Nissan has already landed on our shores.

This as Nissan announced a local roadshow to showcase its Formula E race car, which is set to visit all of the country’s major cities.

“These activations promise to bring all the electrifying action of the Cape Town E-Prix to popular shopping malls in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and Western Cape, where speed enthusiasts can get behind the wheel of Nissan’s Formula-E racecar through a virtually simulated experience,” the car maker explained in a press release sent to Hypertext.

The company is also the first and only Japanese manufacturer in Formula E this year. Its drivers for the competition are Norman Nato and Sacha Fenestraz, both of whom are on course to compete at the Cape Town race, which is the fifth round of this year’s championship.

“Nissan’s participation in Formula-E is the perfect showcase of our ambitions as the company charges towards an electrified future in support of our sustainability goals. Our Formula-E team’s research and development will directly contribute to the expansion of electric vehicle technologies in our consumer cars and provides an exciting glimpse of the potential of future electric vehicles,” added Kabelo Rabotho, country director at Nissan South Africa.

The company adds that its third generation Formula E racecar features 40 percent more power than its predecessor, and is now capable of delivering a top speed of over 320km/h.

As such, it should be fun seeing it, and the other cars in action later this month.

The activations, which have already started on the highveld, are as follows:

  • Menlyn Park Shopping Centre in Pretoria – 3rd to 5th February,
  • Eastgate Shopping Centre in Johannesburg – 3rd to 5th February,
