Say goodbye to Apex Legends Mobile

  • EA and Respawn are shutting down Apex Legends for mobile.
  • The game will stop being playable on 1st May 2023.
  • EA says that everything that was bought by players on their mobile Apex accounts will be lost as it is a completely independent platform.

The creators of Jedi: Fallen Order and Titanfall have shuttered the mobile version of its popular battle royale shooter Apex Legends. This version of the game was only launched at the beginning of 2022.

This is according to a tweet sent out by Respawn Entertainment citing “factors beyond [its] control” leading to the shuttering of the live service.

Respawn says in the tweet that it could no longer maintain the same player experience but does not indicate what exactly the factors were.

“Following a strong start, the content pipeline for Apex Legends Mobile has begun to fall short of that bar for quality, quantity, and cadence. It is for this reason, after months of working with our development partner, that we have made the mutual decision to sunset our mobile game,” reads an official blog post from parent company EA.

“Although disappointing, we are proud of the game we launched, are grateful for the support of the Apex Legends community, and are confident that this is the right decision for players.”

While EA doesn’t provide any real answers, the problem with Apex on Mobile may be a sharp decline in users. Players were claiming last year in August that matches would often have 10 – 15 bots as lobbies needed to be filled.

Other problems persisted since the launch of the game, including frame drops due to the game being hosted on a single global server which began faltering as thousands joined all over the world.

The game was also apparently difficult to play on low-end devices and was very large which may have also contributed to a fall in player count.

EA says it disabled all real money in-app purchases as of 31st January. The game will continue to be available until 1st May 2023 after which it will no longer be playable on mobile devices.

A further problem has reared its ugly head along with the shuttering of the game. Since that game is free, players end up spending money on in-game items, cosmetics, etc. EA indicates that all of these will be gone along with the game from 1st May.

Especially since “Apex Legends Mobile is platform-specific, and is independent of the game on PC and Consoles.” This means that Apex Legends Mobile accounts, and all the things players spent money on, will be lost forever when the servers are shut down.

Despite the looming end to Apex Legends on mobile, the game continues to be very accessible. It is still available for free on PlayStation 4 and 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.
