Shoprite has bursaries for accounting, IT and criminology

  • Shoprite Group has called on local students to apply for one of ten bursaries.
  • Applications close on 30th April.
  • Bursaries are available for accounting, food science, data science and other qualifications.

With the academic year under way, Shoprite Group has opened an invitation to students looking to receive funding for their studies.

As of time of writing, there are 10 bursaries available across a range of professions. The bursaries are for the 2023 and 2024 academic years. These include:

  • Accounting
  • Criminology
  • Product Design
  • Food Science
  • Information Systems
  • Information Technology Systems
  • Data Science
  • Supply Chain & Logistics
  • Retail Business Mangement

The mention of criminology is an interesting one that immediately caught our eye. Of course, as a retailer, Shoprite Group needs to secure its operations and that’s why it’s looking to sponsor a criminology student.

“The Bursary aims at attracting and funding future Data & Crime Analysts to become part of our Security & Loss Prevention Department after completing their studies,” reads the bursary post.

The offer of employment at the Shoprite Group is relevant to all bursary recipients, the firm said in a statement sent to Hypertext.

Shoprite Group says it spent R16 million funding 206 students last year. The bursary programme covers tuition fees as well as on-campus accommodation.

“The exposure that Shoprite has already given me through vacation work has inspired my passion for retail and my ambitions to create innovations that can enhance and improve the customer experience even further,” says Jack Oordt who received a bursary from Shoprite to study toward a Bsc Mathematical and Statistical Sciences.

A full list of bursaries can be found here. Applications for the bursary programme close on 30th April.
