LEGO Classic Defender 90 set goes on sale from 1st April in SA

  • Earlier this month LEGO debuted its new Classic Defender 90 set, celebrating 75 years of the iconic 4×4.
  • The set will go on sale in South Africa in April, with a recommended price tag of R3 999.
  • It consists of 2 336 pieces, and features accessories like a roof rack, jerry can, fire extinguisher, and more.

Earlier this month LEGO unveiled the latest vehicle as part of its ICONS theme in the form of the Classic Defender 90, set number 10317. This is not the first time that LEGO has sold a Defender-inspired set, having done so in the Technic theme previously, but this new offering celebrates 75 years of the iconic 4×4.

Now local availability and pricing for the Classic Defender 90 set have been shared, with Land Rover itself confirming that it will go on sale in South Africa from 1st April.

If you are keen on purchasing one, there are a few things to take note of. The 1st April date for example, is for LEGO VIP access, which is free to join. Thereafter on 4th April, you can purchase the set via LEGO’s online store, with Land Rover selling the set through its retail channels a couple of months down the line from 1st July onwards.

Local LEGO fans will know that there is no VIP programme locally, with the set instead launching in April through the official LEGO stores. A listing for the stores has been created online, which where it will be exclusive until the aforementioned wider launch in July.

As for recommended pricing, like many of the ICONS sets, this one does not come cheap at R3 999.

This price is also high compared to the piece count of only 2 336 pieces, but the set does feature a few customisable options for those wanting to kit it out for offroading, or rather taking up pride of place on display.

“The set has a two-in-one format, allowing builders to create an everyday road-ready model or customise it for adventures,” notes Land Rover in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“The 32cm-long LEGO model reflects this with accessories including a roof rack, raised air intake, front bumper with working winch, side rails and toolbox, plus traction plates for crossing mud and sand. It also has working steering and suspension, opening doors and bonnet and an interior with details based on the full-size Classic Defender,” it adds.

While the set is indeed pricey, it might be the perfect gift for fans of the Defender 90, especially given the attention to detail and customisation available. The Technic version is also retired now, leaving this new System ICONS option as the only way to go.
