After a short reprieve, loadshedding returns

  • Eskom announced that loadshedding would be implemented until further notice, with updates expected before the weekend.
  • The power utility says loadshedding will rotate between Stage 2 and Stage 3 up until Thursday.
  • The reimplementation of loadshedding comes after two days of suspension.

Over the past two days, South Africans breathed a little easier regarding loadshedding, with it being suspended as the National Shutdown and Human Right’s Day kicked off the beginning of the week.

The break was short lived, however, as Eskom shared on Twitter that loadshedding would return for the rest of the week. The only solace citizens could take, was the fact that it saw the implementation of rotating between Stage 2 and Stage 3.

To that end Eskom confirmed that Stage 2 would be implemented from 05:00 in the morning until 16:00, with Stage 3 taking over for the evening until the following morning. This is expected to last until Thursday, with a further updated anticipated for Friday, leading into the weekend.

While it remains to be seen whether higher stages are on the cards for the weekend and beyond, at the time of writing, it looks like Eskom has made some decent progress in rectifying its current power woes.

Last week the power utility noted that it is now sitting at 70 percent energy generating capacity. That said, the timing of the announcements were intriguing, especially as they came on the eve of the aforementioned National Shutdown, where the energy crisis was a significant area of concern for the EFF in its protest action.

Hopefully though this is indeed the turning of a corner, with the Easter holidays and Winter on the way for the country.
