CoJ extends deadline to submit objections to property valuations

  • The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) has extended the deadline for residents to submit objections regarding new property valuations.
  • Initially set for 31st March 2023, it has now been extended to 5th May 2023.
  • The extension was implemented after a “flurry of requests and suggestions” from residents.

Earlier this month we wrote about the looming end of March deadline for City of Johannesburg (CoJ) residents to submit objections regarding new property valuations as part of the General Valuation Roll (GVR) 2023.

That deadline has since been extended, with CoJ confirming this week that it has been pushed to 5th May 2023. To that end, residents have now been given more time to scrutinise the new information regarding their property/properties.

According to Kgamanyane Maphologela, the director of Customer Communications for the CoJ’s Group Finance Department, the extension demonstrates the municipality’s willingness to become customer-centric and responsive to residents.

While that is certainly up for debate, the extension is welcome nonetheless.

As for why it was extended, the sheer volume of queries regarding the new property valuations from residents prompted the shift in deadline. The CoJ notes in a blog post that the “flurry of requests and suggestions from property owners” was the cause.

“Some customers had yet to receive their section 49 notices and had requested the City to extend the inspection and objection period in that regard,” noted Maphologela.

“The extension is done in the spirit that shows that we are a City that listens to its stakeholders. This will afford all the residents enough time to object against any entry of their property should they wish to do so,” he concluded.
