htxt.africast – The Tale of Two Flagship Phones

In this week’s africast we discuss two recent locally launched flagship phones in the form of the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Huawei Mate 50 Pro, both of which have been to our office for review.

We weigh in on the pros and cons of both devices, where each company currently finds itself, and whether we would recommend the flagship phones to our listeners.

Before we delve into that, however, we round up some of the biggest news stories of the past week.

The first involves a rather concerning report from SAP that looks at tech skills scarcity across the African continent, looking at the economic hubs of SA, Nigeria, and Kenya.

The report found that 97 percent of companies will encounter a tech skills challenge in 2023, along with noting that greater risks need to be taken in order to address the continent’s dire tech skills shortage.

Next is Twitter, and more specifically its subscription service Twitter Blue. It has finally been made available in South Africa, charging R149.99 per month to access of roughly 15 different features. Running through the list only a handful look enticing, with the others needing to be baked into the free version of the social media platform.

Whether South Africans are willing to pay R150 a month for the service is unclear, but we’re not interested in it at this stage.
