Last of Us season 2 “won’t be exactly like the game” says producer

  • The Last of Us producer Craig Mazin says that the second season of the show won’t be exactly like the game it is based on.
  • A major event that occurs at the beginning of The Last of Us Part II makes the game emotionally draining to complete.
  • Bella Ramsey has been confirmed to reprise her role as an older Ellie in season two of The Last of Us for HBO.

The first season of HBO’s The Last of Us ended on 12th March after a nine-episode run to critical acclaim and commercial success. The season one finale attracted over a million viewers on HBO Prime, the second-highest viewer rating after episode seven – Left Behind.

Producers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have already confirmed the show has been renewed for a second season, with Bella Ramsey slated to be recast as Ellie in the next season. Season two is set to cover the events of The Last of Us Part II, which portrays life five years after the story of the first game.

Mazin says that the production will make use of costume, makeup, and hair to ensure sure 19-year-old Ramsey looks the part of an older and more grizzled Ellie (who also happens to be 19 in the game at that point).

Speaking to EW.com, Mazin confirmed that season two will be “different” from Part II.

We don’t have to go into spoilers to say that the second game in the series has one of the most controversial first chapters in gaming, tantamount to Metal Gear Solid 2’s Solid Snake / Raiden switch-up.

“It will be different just as this season was different [from the first game],” said Mazin. “Sometimes it will be different radically, and sometimes it will be [barely] different at all. But it’s going to be different and it will be its own thing.”

“It won’t be exactly like the game,” he added. “It will be the show that Neil and I want to make.”

In our review of the second game, we said that if you have come to care about the main characters of the first game, Part II becomes hard to sit and play through at times. Without any major deviations in the story of the game coming to the second season of the show, this will probably remain the same.

There is no release date set yet for the second season of the HBO series, but we shouldn’t expect it any time soon. In the meanwhile, fans of the show can check out both of the video games, currently exclusive only to PlayStation consoles. However, the remaster of The Last of Us Part I is set to launch on PC on 28th March.

All we can say is that fans of the first season should buckle up for season two.
