The Keanu Reeves AMA is more popular than Barack Obama’s

  • Keanu Reeves hosted a Reddit AMA this weekend to promote the next John Wick movie.
  • Users asked about Constantine 2, Wolverine, Hot Ones, and more.
  • The AMA garnered a quarter of a million upvotes and more than 30 000 comments.

The Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) is a staple of the site and a common way for members of the public to ask celebrities and other notable people random questions, with Keanu Reeves the star of one this past weekend.

In an effort to promote the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4, Reeves answered questions on the /r/movies subreddit that went over rather well with the entire Reddit community. At the time of writing it has brought in 243 119 upvotes and 32 855 comments. To put that into perspective the AMA with previous US president Barack Obama resulted in 216 188 upvotes and 22 909 comments.

While it’s easy to say that “Reddit likes Keanu Reeves more than Barack Obama” (which is likely true), it should be noted that the Obama AMA was done more than a decade ago, on 29th August 2012. Reddit has grown much since then with countless more users in 2023, but on the other hand, the Reeves post is still live and receiving attention as we write this, so it’s a toss up.

Comparisons to presidents aside, Reeves answered quite a few interesting questions, especially about future projects he may be involved in, and past projects that never came to fruition.

Constantine (2005) has become a cult classic and one Reddit user asked about a possible sequel. A DC character, Constantine now falls under James Gunn’s purview. When a Reddit user asked if Reeves had discussed Constantine 2 with Gunn, because the user hoped to see it, Reeves responded with “Yes, and me too”.

By chance we happened to rewatch Constantine recently and it holds up. We’re not sure how successful a sequel would be, especially given the shaky ground over at DC, but this gives us hope.

Another interesting part of the AMA is the question of whether Reeves regrets turning down any roles.

“…No…but I did always want to play Wolverine,” the actor writes.

X-Men movies are currently in the works over at Marvel after the famous mutants languished for years as Disney and Fox wrestled with the licence. With Disney now owning Fox and the X-Men we’ve been waiting quite a while for official announcements, including casting.

Wolverine is a marquee character for Disney / Marvel so we’d likely see a young actor ready to play the furry, metal Canadian for many years to come, so Reeves is an unlikely choice to say the least.

Another favourite question from the community we saw is a book recommendation.

“Hi, yes… The Passenger by Cormac McCarthy and Stella Maris because that’s the companion book. Enjoy!” the reply states.

For more of the Reeves AMA, you can read it in its entirety here. Those hoping for more interview questions in the form of a popular YouTube Hot Ones interview may be disappointed as it doesn’t seem to be on the cards.

“…I love chicken wings… but I don’t want to eat really spicy chicken wings… especially not in public… and certainly not with the consequences in private. Bon apetit,” the reply reads.

Many pointed out that suffering from hot food, in public and on camera, is a huge part of Hot Ones, but coming from a place of still ordering lemon and herb at Nando’s, we respect the decision.
