Vodacom notifying customers of price increases via SMS

  • Vodacom is the latest service provider to announce price increases set for later this year.
  • The network has begun informing customers of the upcoming changes via SMS.
  • Depending on your contract, the change could take effect anywhere between 1st April and 1st June 2023.

In recent days a number of service providers and networks have let South African customers know about impending price increases to products, including MTN and Telkom. The latest to do so is Vodacom, but unlike other firms which have sent out releases to media, Vodacom has already begun sending SMSes to customers notifying them of the forthcoming changes.

To that end, we have received notifications sent to our personal devices, with a screenshot of the message featured below. It says, “Hi and thank you for choosing SA’s leading network! From 1 June ’23 there will be a price change to your plan.”

After that, it links to a landing page detailing all the changes across Contract, TopUp, and Mobile Broadband plans for 2023.

“From 1 April 2023, there will be an average tariff plan increase of 6.7%. This only applies to the tariff plan and not the overall bill, meaning there is no change to your handset financing or any value-added services. When it comes to your total bill, this means an average increase of 4.2%,” said page explains.

“To further absorb as much of the costs as possible, and to make sure you get the best value for money, we’ve added 20% of additional anytime data to your plan,” it continues.

While the landing page cites 1st April, the FAQ confirms that these changes will only take effect from 1st June. It also adds that there will be a grace period for those customers who took out a contract with the network between now and the beginning of the year.

“Customers who have recently taken out a new plan from Jan – March 2023, will  receive  a 3 month grace period where Vodacom will apply a discount at our own discretion before the price increase is effected on the 1 June 2023.”

Those looking to cancel their contracts on the back of this news, are advised to, “Contact our customer care team on 135 to assist with this.”
