We could see the new Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 in mid-range phones later this month

  • Qualcomm has debuted its new Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2, which is designed for use in mid-range phones.
  • Two OEMs are planning to release devices with the new chip this month already.
  • The chipset supports 5G and features improvements in speed and camera performance.

Qualcomm has announced its latest iteration of mobile silicon in the form of the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2.

This new offering is not destined for use in flagship phones, but rather the premium mid-range space, with Qualcomm already confirming that it is in the hands of its OEMs.

In fact, the company says that we could see new devices with the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 later this month, with Redmi (a part of Xiaomi) and realme set to launch phones soon with the new chip. While realme is not available in SA, Redmi is, so we may soon its device running this offering from Qualcomm.

As for what the new silicon delivers, the company says the CPU peaks at 2.91GHz for a 50 percent improvement in performance. Added to this is up to 13 percent improvements in power efficiency, extending overall use of devices.

Qualcomm also makes mention of the new camera capabilities it supports. Here the company says the chipset, “Features an 18-bit Triple ISP, allowing users to capture in mega low light mode—snapping 30 images and merging the best parts into one shot for brighter, clearer, more colourful photos after dark. Consumers can capture over 4,000x more camera data for extreme dynamic range with vivid colour and clarity.”

“Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 supports up to 200MP photo capture and staggered HDR video capture with triple exposure from two cameras simultaneously,” it adds.

The latter is rather impressive given that a 200MP lens features on the latest flagship phone from Samsung. That said, it will be some time before we see mid-range phones with 200MP cameras on the rear.

Lastly worth mentioning is support for 5G at up to 4.4Gbps, 5G/4G dual-SIM functionality, and Wi-Fi at up to 3.6Gbps.
