You’re going to start seeing a lot more ads on Instagram

  • Instagram is testing our new placements for ads on its platform, with a wider rollout expected soon.
  • This will see ads appear in search results, as well as reminder ads being added to the mix.
  • Users will be able to opt into reminder ads, but no mention of opting out.

Ads are the bane of social media platform experience, but they are a critical part of keeping the lights on. In order to keep the lights going at one of its most popular apps, Meta has announced some ad testing it is doing on Instagram.

To that end, users may soon start seeing a lot more ads on the platform, with them set to appear in search results, as well as a new feature called reminder ads.

Regarding the former, Instagram explained in a blog post that ads will appear when users actively search for a business, product, or a specific type of content. “Ads will show up in the feed that people can scroll when they tap into a post from search results. We plan to launch this placement globally in the coming months,” it added.

As for reminder ads, Instagram says they can be creating by brands, companies, or advertisers as an option in feeds, allowing for notifications to be sent to users for future events or launches that they might be interested in. Unlike ads in search, there is no indication of how the rollout of reminder ads will work.

This new feature is opt-in, as the social media platform also notes that you can, “receive three notifications from Instagram one day before, 15 minutes before, and at the time of the event.”

How many users will indeed want to receive reminder ads is unclear for now, but it looks like the Meta-owned company is actively searching for ways to bring in more money.

Hopefully this does not negatively impact the user experience.
