Here’s the Matric rewrite exams timetable

  • The Department of Basic Education says that the matric rewrite exams will begin next month, on 3rd May 2023.
  • These exams will begin with international language papers and English Home Language Paper 1.
  • The final exams of the period will be written on 14th June which will include the CAT and IT practicals.

With the Department of Education announcing an 80.1 percent pass rate for last year’s matric national senior certificate examinations, it indicates that thousands of students across South Africa were unfortunately unable to pass their November exams.

All hope is not lost however, as the department has a number of ways for students to either catch up and try again. Additionally, there are certain private institutions that also help matrics looking to redo their exams.

While a few months after the fact, we collected some of these second chance options here.

One of these options is the so-called Second Chance Matric programme, otherwise known as the May/June rewrites.

The programme is more than just rewrites, as the department explained earlier this year that it also offers students interested in rewriting certain papers to take advantage of online lessons, teachers and other resources to prepare for the rewrites.

According to the department, there are 15 days left before the matric rewrite exams begin. They are set to start on Wednesday 3rd May 2023 and will conclude Wednesday 14th June 2023. The first exams will be the international language paper at 09:00, but most students who are rewriting will began with English Home Language paper 1 at 14:00.

It seems by the latest timetable (PDF), most students will be writing in the afternoon at least in the first week with english, computer applications technology theory, mathematics, accounting all in the afternoon slot.

There is a single break during the exam period, with a non-examination day earmarked for Friday, 26th May.

After that, engineering, graphics and design paper one starts in the morning at 09:00. The final exams are the CAT practical rewrite, IT practical rewrite, agricultural sciences paper 2 and nautical sciences paper 2 all written on 14th June.
