  • Land Rover is billing this new Defender as the “ultimate luxury explorer”.
  • The vehicle will come in a Shadow Atlas Matt finish, and feature a six-cylinder Ingenium P400 petrol engine.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given South Africans affinity for the brand, the new modern model of Defender, has proved quite popular. So much so that Land Rover is looking to bring more models to our our shores, with the latest being the Defender 130 Outbound.

The company describes this longer wheel-base 4×4 as the, “ultimate luxury explorer”.

“Available exclusively with five seats, it brings even greater potential for overland exploration and enables those with active and adventurous lifestyles to pack everything they need to get out and explore,” it adds in a press release sent to Hypertext.

While local availability and pricing are yet to be officially shared, Land Rover does note that the Outbound is expected in SA towards the end of this year, which means it’s likely a good idea to speak with your nearest dealer to find out when and how to get your hands on one.

As we await the finer details, let’s see what’s on offer here.

Starting with size, and as mentioned there are five seats in this setup, and up to 2 516 litres2 of space in the rear. Added to this is a near flat loadspace floor, with 1.267 metres in length behind the second row, which Land Rover says can easily accommodate wetsuits, kit bags, camping equipment, climbing gear, and the like.

In terms of the livery, the colour options on display in the images here feature a Shadow Atlas Matt finish to the bumpers and grille insert, while side vents are finished in Anthracite. To complement this, the Defender 130 Outbound has 20″ wheels finished in Gloss Black, with 22″ wheels in Shadow Atlas Matt also available.

Other important elements to this vehicle include the ability to tow cargo up to 3 000kg, which is hauled thanks to a six-cylinder Ingenium P400 petrol engine under the bonnet.

As for the 4×4 capabilities and technology on offer, the Defender 130 Outbound has an, “Intelligent All-Wheel Drive System and Terrain Response 2 while Electronic Air Suspension and Adaptive Dynamics are fitted as standard. Advanced off-road driving technologies ensure effortless and reassuring progress across any terrain, with the Electronic Air Suspension allowing up to 430mm of articulation and up to 900mm of wading.”

Along with the new Outbound, Land Rover has two other models on Defender on the way for SA too.
