Lost your Matric Certificate? This online platform can help

  • Umalusi has launched a new online portal that it says will significantly reduce the time it takes to apply to replace a lost or damaged matric certificate.
  • Instead of the usual one to six weeks, applications on the portal can be processed in a few days, after which applicants can collect the certificate or pay to have it delivered.
  • All users require to replace their certificates is a small payment, a certified ID copy, and a certified affidavit explaining how or why the original certificate was lost or damaged.

So you recently moved, and during an evening of cold sweat and wide eyes you realised you could no longer find your original matric certificate. Worse still, you fear the process to get it replaced will be a long and arduous one.

To make your life a bit easier in this regard, Umalusi, South Africa’s Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, has launched an online platform, accessible via PC or on smartphone, where you can apply to replace your lost or damaged certificates.

The new system was unveiled at a recent webinar held by Umalusi under the theme “Innovatively replacing your lost or damaged certificate issued by Umalusi.”

It is called the Online Application System for Replacement Certificates, and apparently can significantly reduce the turnaround time and costs involved in replacing a lost or damaged certificate, according to a press statement from Umalusi.

Under normal circumstances, it takes one to six weeks for a replacement matric certificate (or other kinds of certificates) application to be processed.

Once you have applied on the portal for a replacement, you will have to pay R137, and collect the replacement certificate from Umalusi “within two working days from the application.”

If you want your new certificate couriered to you rather, you can pay R202 (R137 for the certificate and R65 for courier fees) and wait seven working days to have it delivered to your chosen address.

The portal can be reached here, and allows you to apply to replace several different types of certificates including certificates no longer issued, namely:

  • “AB4 – Adult Basic Education and Training Level 4,
  • ASC – Amended Senior Certificate,
  • GET – General and Further Education Certificate,
  • G12 – Senior Certificate,
  • SSC – National Senior Certificate,
  • NCV – National Certificate Vocational (Level 2 – 4),
  • and the NSC – National Senior Certificate.”

For the application itself, you will need to supply a signed affidavit from a police station stating the status of the original certificate, whether it was or how it was damaged.

You will need to supply a certified copy of your ID document, and finally, you can choose whether you want to collect the certificate from the Umalusi Pretoria offices or if you want it delivered to you.

You will have to be registered before you can apply to get a replacement certificate. Once you have an account however the process is quick and painless.

Thousands of South Africans struggle with misplaced or damaged certificates, and this digital portal will hopefully make their lives a little bit easier.
