htxt.africast – A gaming chair, tablet, and phone land on our review desk

THIS WEEK’S AFRICAST IS PROUDLY SPONSORED BY EVERKI

Just like loadshedding, the africast remains a constant and for this latest iteration we are looking back at three devices that recently landed on our review desk – the Ergotherapy Ergo G Gaming Chair, Nokia T10 tablet, and TECNO Spark 10 Pro smartphone.

Before we dive into those review desk arrivals though, we round up the week’s biggest news stories.

Starting us off is City Power, which is threatening Johannesburg residents with refusal of service for failure to pay the utility. It says that if less than 70 percent of customers in an area have failed to pay their City Power accounts, then the service provider will no dispatch technicians to deal with faults or outages.

It is a brave tactic, and one we think will blow up in its face.

Next is Google I/O, which saw the tech giant reveal more of its ambitious plans for AI. We saw the new language model that powers Bard, as well as the generative AI platform now available to access in South Africa. Google also plans to bring more AI-leveraging tools to the fore in coming months, along with integrate them into more products.

While Google still lags behind the ChatGPT-powered Microsoft in the AI race, it is looking to catch up quickly.

The last piece of news involves Huawei, which held an event for the Middle East and Africa region that we attended. At the event, a full lineup of flagship devices were shown off, including two new phones – the P60 Pro and Mate X3. Both devices are earmarked for South Africa, but full details on local pricing and availability are yet to be confirmed.

We have the P60 Pro in for review, and will be sharing our thoughts on the device shortly after the local launch event.
