Mortal Kombat 12: devs give hint for a new game in the series

  • NetherRealm Studios has given a hint into what players can expect with its latest title, Mortal Kombat 12.
  • According to the teaser, we could see more timeline-jumping shenanigans in the upcoming game.
  • It was revealed in a Warner Bros. earning call that Mortal Kombat 12 would be launching in 2023.

It’s been four years since the last mainline Mortal Kombat game was released, and now we have finally been given some indication that a new sequel is in the works at NetherRealm Studios.

Chief creative officer of NetherRealm and one of the co-creators of the original Mortal Kombat game, Ed Boon, shared the teaser on his Twitter account. The short video began with the devs at NetherRealm thanking the fans as Mortal Kombat hits its 30th anniversary.

“Thank you the Mortal Kombat fans for 30 years of amazing support,” said Boon near the end of the video. “We’re not quite done yet.”

The teaser in question is a very short glimpse of the inside of an hourglass as the sands of time rush past. Mortal Kombat 11’s story mode involved extensive timeline and time-jumping shenanigans and ended on what basically amounts to a reset of the series.

We then zoom into a single grain of sand in excruciating detail until it explodes into what appears to be a whole new universe.

A time-resetting hourglass features at the end of MK11, so this might be a way for NetherRealm studios to either say that the entire storyline of Mortal Kombat will be changing or perhaps they are looking to go even deeper in the expanded timelines and universes theme.

Either way, it looks like Mortal Kombat’s deep lore is set to get even more complex. Mortal Kombat 12 has been on lock for a while now, in terms of if it is being worked on and when it will be released.

Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav nonchalantly revealed that Mortal Kombat 12 would be releasing in 2023 during a company financial call. Zaslav also says that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was slated for a 2023 launch, but this title has been delayed for about a year.

Since reimagining the fight game classic with Mortal Kombat (2011), NetherRealm has consistently put out high-quality titles in the series, replete with customisation options and incredibly gorey Fatalities.

We enjoyed Mortal Kombat 11, so here’s hoping the next title in the series is just as good.
