OpenAI launches free ChatGPT iOS app, with Android on the way

  • OpenAI has launched a new free-to-use version of its ChatGPT platform for iOS devices.
  • The company says an Android version is on the way, but does not mention a specific date for availability.
  • At the time of writing, the iOS app does not appear in the South African App Store.

This week OpenAI, the company behind everyone’s favourite generative AI platform, ChatGPT, announced that it is making an iOS app freely available to users.

There is an Android version on the way, but OpenAI has not disclosed when said app will be available for users to download.

Back to the iOS app and OpenAI says it syncs users’ history across devices, along with it being free-to-use.

“It also integrates Whisper, our open-source speech-recognition system, enabling voice input. ChatGPT Plus subscribers get exclusive access to GPT-4’s capabilities, early access to features and faster response times, all on iOS,” the company added in a blog post.

In terms of availability, the United States is the first region to receive access, with the iOS app receiving a wider rollout to more countries in the coming weeks. A quick look at the South African App Store shows that OpenAI ChatGPT is not available to access yet.

While it remains to be seen how much interest there is in the generative AI solution on mobile devices, it is clear that OpenAI is trying to position the platform in as many ecosystems as possible. The ultimate goal here, appears to be aimed at creating an even larger data pool with which the AI can learn and improve.

“We’re eager to see how you use the app. As we gather user feedback, we’re committed to continuous feature and safety improvements for ChatGPT,” OpenAI continued.
