PlayStation Showcase serves up 12 minutes of high octane Spider-Man 2 gameplay

  • Last night PlayStation held its latest Showcase event, closing out the live stream with 12 minutes of gameplay from Marvel’s Spider-Man.
  • The gameplay revealed Peter Parker in the black symbiote suit, along with a look at Kraven the Hunter, and glimpses of The Lizard.
  • It is slated for release this year, but no definite date has been outlined yet.

PlayStation held a bumper Showcase event last night, highlighting several indie, AAA, and VR titles that are being worked on or arriving imminently. The biggest and most expansive reveal of the night came in the form of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is set for a release in Fall (Spring for SA) later this year.

The gameplay, which runs at close to 11 minutes and is featured in the video below was pre-empted by a reveal of one of the antagonists for the game – Kraven the Hunter. It looks like his forces are not only hunting down the two Spider-Men in this game, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, but also The Lizard, who Parker is seemingly trying to save.

Sticking with Parker we see him fight in the iconic black symbiote suit, although there was no sight of Venom, who will be one of the other antagonists. Still, we got to see the new UI for the game, as well as just how slick the fight scenes are, not to mention the quick time events and cut scenes that the franchise has become renowned for.

It also looks like much of the game will see players switch between Parker and Morales, so hopefully those boring missions as Mary-Jane are gone for this sequel.

Swinging through the city is also getting some upgrades, as both Spider-Men are now able to glide, which we see in action in the gameplay trailer below too.

“First, get a glimpse at the near-instant switching between both our playable Spider-Men. And if that wasn’t enough, traversal gets a significant speed boost in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2! Cue the Web Wings, which can be deployed by either Spider-Man to move about the city swiftly and urgently,” highlights PlayStation in a blog post.

“Use wind tunnels between skylines to move with haste and behold the capabilities of the PS5 console’s SSD as you soar above the concrete jungle, zipping past all manner of cars, buildings, and people (and pigeons). If you thought traversal in our first two games was exhilarating, just wait until you experience it firsthand in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” it adds.

Set to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive when it arrives later this year, the gameplay we’ve seen to date on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 looks very promising, but that is to be expected from Insomniac given its strong showings in the franchise to date.
