STASIS: BONE TOTEM – a new South African game that looks absolutely terrifying

  • A small Cape Town-based studio has announced the release date for their next title, STASIS: BONE TOTEM.
  • It is a point-and-click-style horror game and will launch on 31st May on Steam and GoG.
  • The game will feature voice actors from film and TV series, and legendary videogame composer Mark Morgan.

There is a brand new horror game in the guise of Planescape: Torment and Escape from Monkey Island heading to PCs as of 31st May, and it was made by a small studio based in Cape Town, South Africa.

It’s called STASIS: BONE TOTEM, and it is a sequel to 2015’s STASIS, which received glowing reviews from publications like Rock Paper Shotgun and Destructoid.

BONE TOTEM is a similar horror-themed point-and-click adventure title, that will see players take on the role of salvager couple Mac and Charlie as they board a mysterious abandoned vessel at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

The previous game took place in a space station, so it seems BONE TOTEM is taking The Abyss route to its intraterrestrial thrills.

According to the developer’s release date announcement, the game will feature a score from Mark Morgan, the legendary composer of the first two Fallout games as well as the RPG classic Planescape: Torment. Meanwhile, sci-fi author J. Barton Mitchell has been confirmed as the screenplay writer for BONE TOTEM.

“We also involved a professional studio, Night Rocket Productions, to manage the in-person acting and audio recording. All of the actors are seasoned TV and film professionals,” explain the developers.

Additionally, The Brotherhood went to great lengths to ensure the game was localised in several languages and will be available in English, German, French, Russian, Polish, Spanish, Turkish, and Italian languages at launch.

The first game currently sits at a solid 79 on Metacritic, so we are tentatively excited about this follow-up. And even more excited about quality videogaming emerging out of South Africa’s burgeoning industry.

In March, Hypertext sat down with members of South Africa’s gaming industry, especially in the education space to unpack the current landscape. It was a bleak one, indeed, with the experts telling us about the numerous challenges involved in getting smaller studios up and running.

So we are happy to shed some light on local is lekker gaming. You can wishlist STASIS: BONE TOTEM right now on STEAM and Good Old Games ahead of its 31st May launch.
