Volvo’s EX30 produces lowest carbon footprint of any of its cars to date

  • Volvo has teased the imminent unveiling of a new all-electric SUV in the form of the EX30.
  • The carmaker is scheduled to unveil the EV globally on 7th June, with it boasting the lowest carbon footprint of any Volvo car to date.
  • The company says it yielded a 25 percent reduction in its carbon footprint compared to the fully electric C40 and XC40 models.

Much has been made of carbon footprints in the motoring industry, especially after the well documented 2015 scandal involving Volkswagen and the illegal tinkering of emissions numbers on some of its vehicles. We bring this up as Volvo is planning to reveal a new all-electric SUV in the form of the EX30.

The Swedish carmaker teased some details about the EV ahead of its full global reveal on 7th June, with the headline grabbing statistic being that it produces the smallest carbon footprint of any Volvo car to date.

“By tackling emissions across the entire production and lifecycle of the Volvo EX30, we managed to reduce its total carbon footprint over 200,000 kms of driving to below 30 tonnes,” it explained in a press release.

“This is a 25 per cent reduction compared to our fully electric C40 and XC40 models – a good step towards our aim to cut our overall CO2 emissions per car by 40 per cent between 2018 and 2025,” Volvo added.

While the company does not unpack the manufacturing process or indeed the design or engineering that has yielded the lowest ever carbon footprint for one of its cars, it did highlight that the EX30, “has zero tailpipe emissions”. This of course is a major contributor to the size of said footprint.

On top of the carbon footprint, Volvo has highlighted the the recycled materials that feature in the design of the EV too.

“While we use less steel and aluminium when building our new small SUV, more of it is also recycled content. Around a quarter of all aluminium used in building the car is recycled, as is approximately 17 per cent of all steel used in producing a Volvo EX30, further reducing the environmental impact from those materials,” the carmaker pointed out.

“The material used for the Volvo EX30 is another contributor to a more sustainable way of creating new cars. About 17 per cent of all plastics in the car, from interior components to exterior bumpers, are recycled – the highest percentage in any Volvo car to date,” it added.

We still have to wait for pricing and availability to be detailed by Volvo, with those likely arriving on 7th June when the full reveal happens, but it’s clear that this EV is very much designed with sustainability in mind. Hopefully SA-focused information will also be in the offing after the 7th June event.
