SA pre-orders for Volvo’s new electric SUV, the EX30, go live tomorrow

  • Volvo has officially unveiled its latest all-electric SUV – the EX30.
  • The new EV is heading to South Africa, with local pre-orders opening up tomorrow.
  • The base model Volvo EX30 is recommended to retail from R775 900.

Earlier today, as it said it would, Volvo debuted its latest all-electric SUV, the Volvo EX30. One of the most compact SUVs that the Swedish carmaker has made, the EX30 is also notable given how small a carbon footprint it produces, according to Volvo.

The new offering is also slated for South African roads, with Volvo SA confirming at an event in Johannesburg that pre-orders for the EX30 go live tomorrow.

The all-electric SUV is expected to arrive in SA in early 2024, although a precise date has not been mentioned at the time of writing. There are a few different models that comprise the lineup, but the base version starts from R775 900.

As reported by Clare Petra (Gadget Gal) on Twitter, the above pricing is for the Core Single Motor option.

The rest of the recommended pricing for the range is as follows:

  • EX30 Plus Single Motor ER – R865 900,
  • EX30 Plus Twin Motor Performance – R935 900,
  • EX30 Ultra Single Motor ER – R965 900,
  • EX30 Ultra Twin Motor Performance – R995 900.

Along with the small carbon footprint, Volvo has highlighted some of the features of this new offering.

“The new small SUV represents the cornerstone of Volvo’s electrification growth ambitions. It debuts as the fastest-accelerating Volvo ever, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in a mere 3.6 seconds in 315 kW Twin Motor Performance guise. The extended-range version of the Single Motor (rear-wheel drive) powertrain, meanwhile, is capable of covering up to 480 km on the WLTP cycle,” it noted in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“We worked exceptionally hard to set EX30 pricing at what is unquestionably an extremely competitive level, granting South African consumers the opportunity to own a fully electric SUV for the price of a similarly sized internal combustion engined vehicle. Of course, the EX30 also offers all the luxury features you would expect from a Volvo, not to mention breath-taking levels of performance,” added Greg Maruszewski, MD at Volvo Car South Africa.

While it is quite easy for a carmaker to overlook SA right now when it comes to the launch of new EVs given the ongoing energy crisis, we must commend Volvo on continuing to prioritise this region as part of its electrification plans.

As such it will be interesting to see how the Volvo EX30 performs compared to other compact all-electric SUVs, like the Jaguar I-PACE.
