Qualcomm debuts Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 to power affordable 5G phones

  • Qualcomm’s silicon foundry has revealed a new chipset in the form of the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2.
  • The chipset is specifically designed for use in entry-level to mid-range devices, with Qualcomm wanting to make 5G more accessible.
  • The likes of Redmi and Vivo already have access to the chipset, and are set to reveal new devices powered by it later this year.

Qualcomm has announced a new chipset that is specifically aimed for use in devices in the more affordable entry-level to mid-range space. The chipset is called the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, with the silicon maker noting that it will improve CPU speed, camera performance, support for AI, and enhanced connectivity for budget-friendly smartphones.

Regarding the latter it will make 5G more accessible, according to Qualcomm.

“Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 provides effortless, all-day use with fast CPU speeds, sharp photography and videography, plus speedy 5G and Wi-Fi for reliable connections,” it highlighted in a blog post.

“With this generational advancement in the Snapdragon 4-series, consumers will have greater access to the most popular and relevant mobile features and capabilities. We optimized every aspect of the platform in order to maximize the experiences for users,” added Matthew Lopatka, director of product management at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

In terms of what the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 can muster, Qualcomm notes that it features a 10 percent improvement in CPU performance, with the Kryo CPU on offer delivering peak speeds up to 2.2GHz.

Added to this is Quick Charge 4+ technology that can refill up to 50 percent of battery capacity in roughly 15 minutes. Qualcomm also notes that the chipset can leverage AI on the camera for better images in low-light or dim environments.

As for when you’ll be able to purchase a device with this new chipset, Qualcomm says OEMs already have access to the platform, with Redmi and Vivo in particular being mentioned as having devices for the second half of 2023.

As both of those OEMs operate in SA, we should see some affordable phones powered by the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 before the end of 2023.
