[UPDATE] Gauteng promises “thousands” of jobs but lists far fewer

  • The Gauteng provincial government says “thousands and thousands” of jobs are on offer for the province’s residents.
  • Those interested can apply online from 16th June 2023, but the websites listed on official communications don’t seem to be working.
  • We could only find around 90 open positions on the Gauteng jobs page.

*UPDATE: During a keynote address at Tsakane Stadium in Brakpan, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said that 8 000 new jobs will be advertised for youth to apply on Youth Day 16th June.

Original article follows:

The provincial government of Gauteng has been promoting several jobs and employment drives in recent weeks, a boon to South Africa’s most populous region especially as unemployment weighs heavy on the country’s youth.

On Monday, the Gauteng government began promoting their latest job drive on social media, stating that there are “thousands and thousands of jobs on offer” and that applications can be made online.

According to provincial Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng is “filling all vacant and funded permanent jobs across all department within the Gauteng Provincial Government as we open opportunities for all.”

The premier’s Twitter post indicates that there are positions open for drivers, receptionists, cleaners, artists, security officials, social workers, media officers, engineers and even a chief financial officer.

Applicants can go to “www.professionaljobcentre.gpg.gov.za” to see what positions are open and for when, or at least that is what the post says. However typing this link in will get you nowhere, because the Gauteng job page is actually https://professionaljobcentre.gpg.gov.za/Public/Jobs.aspx.

Instead of the thousands of positions, we could only count 95 jobs currently open. Likewise, the premier is incorrect as some departments have no open jobs listed under them, such as the Gauteng Department of Finance which has no positions open as of the time of writing. We could also not find a listing searching for a chief financial officer.

Another Twitter post, this time directly from the official page of the provincial government tells potential applicants to go to “www.jobs.gauteng.gov.za.” However, this exact website seemingly doesn’t exist. We could only find www.gauteng.gov.za which directs users to apply on the same professional job centre page.

The link on the post itself also takes you to a dead page. Users are also reporting dead links when they attempt to check the jobs for themselves. Again, we could not find the location for the “thousands” of jobs.

It is possible that the jobs will be added to the page once applications open on 16th June 2023, and perhaps the links will be functional then, or perhaps they are down because of enormous interest. If this is the case we will update this article with the relevant information.

Despite the fact that there are much less than the thousands and thousands provincial communications indicate, there are still many open positions across several departments. These can be found here. Simply search for a relevant position, click “View” on the right of the screen under “action.”

Each position will allow you to apply, however, you must first create an account, which can be done here.

Last month, the Gauteng provincial government launched an initiative to upskill thousands of young people in the installation of solar photovoltaic technology. The trainees will receive a monthly stipend and be part of a three-year course.
