Meta announces Quest 3 mixed reality headset

  • The Meta Quest 3 has been announced but aside from pricing we’ll have to wait until September to learn more.
  • The headset sports a “next-gen Snapdragon chipset” many believe to be the Snapdragon XR3 which is yet to be unveiled.
  • Ahead of the Quest 3’s launch the Quest 2 has been discounted in a bid to bring more folks into the metaverse.

Mark Zuckerberg and Meta are still trying to make the Metaverse happen and it’s launching a new headset to try and lure more folks into cyberspace. The Meta Quest 3 was announced on Thursday by Zuck on Instagram where he commented on the headset being thinner and more comfortable.

“Better displays and resolution. Next gen Qualcomm chipset with 2x the graphics performance. Our most powerful headset yet. Coming this fall,” the Meta chief executive officer posted.

The Quest 3 is powered by a “next-gen Snapdragon chipset” which many believe to be the as yet unreleased Snapdragon XR3 chipset. Meta says that the chipset it’s using delivers twice the graphical performance as the chipset in the Quest 2.

More about this headset will be shared at Meta Connect happening this year on 27th September. However, as regards pricing Zuckerberg did say that the 128GB iteration of the Quest 3 will start at $499.99.

Meta will also be discounting the Quest 2 starting 4th June. The 128GB Quest 2 will be discounted to $299.99 while the 256GB iteration will cost $349.99.

While Meta brags that this will help more people access the magic of all-in-one VR, the Quest is only supported in a handful of countries, none of which are on the African continent.

We’re just impressed to see Meta continuing the push toward the Metaverse especially when the division responsible for that push, Reality Labs continues to operate at a loss and those losses will increase this year. In Q1 2022 the division brought in $695 million in revenue while in Q1 2023, it brought in just $339 million.

Will a shiny new headset make folks want to jump into the metaverse? We’re not so sure, but we’ll have to see what else Meta shows off at Connect later this year.
