Eskom implements Stage 5 loadshedding at short notice

  • Eskom has had to implement Stage 5 loadshedding at 14:00 this afternoon.
  • The power utility says delays in the return of generating units are the reason for the increased loadshedding.
  • Stage 4, however, is expected to take effect after 05:00 tomorrow morning.

The week has not started well for South Africans as Eskom has had to implement Stage 5 loadshedding at short notice this afternoon.

The power utility issued an alert on Twitter (now known as X) confirming that Stage 5 loadshedding would take effect from 14:00 this afternoon until 05:00 tomorrow morning.

The reason for the sudden increase, according to Eskom, is an apparent delay in the return of as many as five generating units to service, coupled with the failure of a further five units during the course of today.

The utility has not provided definitive information as to what loadshedding we can expect in the coming days, nor what the rest of the week holds, but has said that Stage 5 will be in effect until 05:00 tomorrow morning. From there, Stage 4 is expected to be in effect until further notice.

This all of course, is if further units do not fall, or the delay in return is not extended. Either way, with the celsius still low in many parts of the country, this news comes at the worst possible time.

As always, to stay up to date on alerts of changes from the power utility, we advise downloading EskomSePush, which will also provide a timely loadshedding schedule for your area.
