Google Play Games beta expands to more countries, including SA

  • Google Play Games beta has been expanded, rolling out to 120 countries, including South Africa.
  • The new offering allows users to play mobile games on PC, as well as pick up their progress across multiple devices.
  • Google has been working on emulators for developers to debug their games for this new offering.

Early last year Google Play Games beta for PC was launched, and since then Google has been slowly rolling out the new platform to more regions and users.

This week was South Africa’s turn, as we were part of the latest expansion of 60 countries that included the likes of India too.

At the time of writing, Google Play Games beta is now available in 120 countries with more than 100 Android games available to play, although there is no word yet from the company on when it plans to move the platform out of beta.

For those wanting to try it out, you’ll of course need to log into your Google account for access, with the company also outlining a series of PC specification requirements should you wish to play.

Those minimum requirements are:

  • OS – Windows 10 (v2004),
  • Storage – SSD with 10GB available storage,
  • Graphics – Intel UHD Graphics 630 GPU or comparable,
  • Processor – 4 CPU physical cores (some games require an Intel GPU),
  • Memory – 8GB RAM,
  • Windows admin account,
  • Hardware virtualisation must be turned on.

As TechCrunch points out, Google Play Games beta for PC also supports multiple languages, with English and Hindi available in India, although it is unclear if any SA-based localisation is present.

Also worth mentioning is that users will be able to pick up their progress in a game across multiple devices, which means you’re not fixed to PC should you wish to change up what you’re playing on.

Lastly, Google has been investing in this platform and beta, having launched an emulator for developers to debug their titles for PC. As such, we could see more Android games outside of the existing 100 being ported over for this beta.
