htxt.africast – Microsoft overcomes hurdle in Activision Blizzard pursuit

The africast returns this week despite the serious drop in temperature for everyone in Johannesburg. While we could have spent the entire episode discussing the snow, we are instead focusing our attention on the ongoing Microsoft saga and its bid to acquire Activision Blizzard, which could be the biggest deal in gaming history.

Before that, however, we’re doing our usual news roundup of stories we believe to be particularly noteworthy.

We start with NSFAS, as it is being sued alongside one of its partners Tenet Technologies by the Tertiary Education and Research Network of South Africa, which also goes by the name of Tenet.

With the former embroiled any issues related to allegations surrounding bank fees, the latter is getting caught up in the mess. “The misuse of our name and trademark case had significant and detrimental impact on our company,” the company’s executive officer, Guy Halse, told Hypertext’s Luis Monzon via email.

Next is an increase in the amount of cold crypto wallet scams, as discovered by Kaspersky.

“The attack starts with an email purporting to be from Ripple and offering the target a chance to win XRP tokens in a giveaway. The link in said email directs to a blog post that looks like it could be Ripple,” wrote Brendyn Lotz of the new scam technique.

Lastly for news is EA Sports, which is readying to release its first football game sans the backing of FIFA. The lead up has been a little rough, with fans of the franchise roasting a cover for EA Sports FC 24 that surfaced online this week.

“The likes of Andrea Pirlo and Ronaldinho, who will be a part of the game as icons, as well as current Arsenal player Bakayo Saka and Borussia Dortmund’s Youssouffa Moukoko have been highlighted as looking particularly odd,” noted Robin-Leigh Chetty in his coverage.

As for the meat and potatoes, we are discussing how Microsoft’s deal to acquire Activision Blizzard has surpassed its latest hurdle in beating the FTC in court. In the UK, the CMA are also looking to hold talks with the company to potentially restructure the deal in hopes that it can be approved and meet the needs of all parties.

Either way, once the deal is completed, it will indeed change the gaming industry landscape, leading us to wonder what PlayStation’s next move is?
