MTN South Africa has announced an initiative that will be of interest to budding journalists, with the telecommunications company planning to sponsor 13 journalism bursaries in partnership with local institution Fray College.

The bursaries are specifically for a qualification from the private institution, with the one-year journalism qualification said to cover, “both traditional journalism skills and more modern skills like multimedia storytelling.”

Some of the topics that are covered in the course include media law, governance, research for journalists, solutions journalism, writing, data journalism, sub-editing, podcasting, and a few more specialist areas.

MTN SA adds that the bursaries cover tuition, study material, mobile devices, and airtime for the 13 aforementioned students.

MTN chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs officer, Jacqui O’Sullivan.

“The course includes both online and in person learning components. MTN said it wanted to ensure sure that each student had the resources to not only attend classes but also to tell the stories of their community,” the telco noted in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“In today’s digital age, access to technology is crucial for aspiring journalists to stay connected, gather information, and engage with their audiences effectively. By providing mobile devices and airtime as part of the bursaries, we aim to bridge the digital divide and empower students with the necessary tools to excel in their studies and future careers,” added MTN chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs officer, Jacqui O’Sullivan (pictured above).

Those prospective journalism students wanting to find out more about, as well as apply for the bursaries are advised to contact Fray College’s Mamaponya Motsai via email on mmotsai[at]fraycollege[dot]com.
