OpenAI makes GPT-4 generally available

  • OpenAI has announced the general availability of GPT-4 for all developers.
  • The latest iteration of the text generation model is available to existing developers that work with OpenAI’s offerings, with a wider rollout later this month.
  • GPT-4 is said to be better than its predecessor, along with performing at a near “human-level”.

Much has been made of generative AI this year and the fact that much of the training they require is sourced from publicly available information online.

While regulators across the world start to take a closer look at what that means for privacy and content ownership, the likes of OpenAI are pushing ahead with their offerings, with the company announcing the general availability of its GPT-4 text generation model.

The model is being made available via OpenAI’s API for existing developers it works with, as plans to make it more widely available to new developers are expected to take shape later this month.

“Starting today, all paying API customers have access to GPT-4. In March, we introduced the ChatGPT API, and earlier this month we released our first updates to the chat-based models. We envision a future where chat-based models can support any use case,” noted OpenAI in a blog post.

“GPT-4 is our most capable model. Millions of developers have requested access to the GPT-4 API since March, and the range of innovative products leveraging GPT-4 is growing every day,” it added.

For those unfamiliar with the model, it is said to be significantly more powerful than its predecessor, GPT-3.5, with it capable of generating code along with text, as well as make sense of image-based inputs.

In fact, OpenAI says it can perform at a near “human-level”, which if true is both impressive and a little concerning, especially as companies look for ways to integrate AI into their businesses and potentially putting the employment of existing workers at risk.

As TechCrunch points out, however, GPT-4 is still prone to hallucinations, so there are still instances where the information it provides is not accurate, and in some cases cases, completely made up.

That said, once hallucinations become a thing of the past, the power of generative AI becomes a force to be reckoned with.
