OPPO has been picking up the pace when it comes to launching new hardware in South Africa. Following the company’s launch of the Reno10 series locally in late-June, now a new addition for its premium mid-range A series has entered the market in the form of the A98 5G.

This latest model is the top of the line for OPPO’s A series, and looks to deliver the same value for money as its predecessors.

To that end, OPPO South Africa has shared recommended pricing for the A98 5G, which is available to purchase from today onwards, with the device retailing for R11 999.

So what do you get for just shy of R12k?

Well as the name suggests, this A98 supports 5G connectivity thanks to the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 chipset powering the device. Added to this is a solid 8GB of RAM, which is par for the course these days in this segment, along with 256GB of onboard storage. The A98 also features dual SIM functionality, with nano SIM trays on both options.

Sticking with the internals a large 5 000mAh battery is present, which too is becoming more common in this price bracket. This particular model supports 67W super charging, or what OPPO calls SUPERVOOC, which yields a 0 to 100 percent battery charge in 44 minutes, according to the Chinese phone brand.

Should that be too long, you can go from 0 to 50 percent battery capacity in 18 minutes.

Shifting to the outside, a 6.72″ FullHD+ display is present, with a punch hole to house the 32MP selfie camera. On the rear a trio of lenses are responsible for capturing images and video, as a 64MP option is the primary shooter, while a 2MP monochrome and 2MP microscopic lenses are paired with it. The latter is not true microscopic, however, and is more likely OPPO’s lexicon for the macro functionality.

All in all, the OPPO A98 5G looks a solid all-around device. With this mobile segment already pretty well stacked, it will be interesting to see how it fares.
