UPDATED: R45 999 gets you the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5

  • Samsung has said that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 will start at R45 999.
  • Contracts will start at R699 from all of South Africa’s major network operators.
  • Pre-orders of the Galaxy Z Fold5 will begin shipping on 11th August.

UPDATE: Since publication we have learned the price of the Galaxy Z Fold5 is in fact R45 999 and not R35 999 as previously reported.

Now that Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold5 we can shift our focus to the price and we warn you, this is going to be a pricey piece of kit, as the headline alludes to.

No point in beating around the bush then, the Galaxy Z Fold5 will cost you R45 999 at launch on 25th August. This is around the same price that the Fold4 is retailing for right now although we suspect those prices are going to sink fast now that the new model is getting ready for a debut. This is quite a bit more than the Fold4 and we suspect that only the well heeled tech buff will be able to pick this update up.

While it is expensive, the Fold5 is looking like a good jumping in point for those who have been curious about folding smartphones since Samsung first announced the technology in 2019.

Since then we have come a long way with more durable glass, a more rugged chassis and cover as well as dust resistance now standard in the Galaxy Fold5 and Flip5.

To get a bit of a haircut on the price of your new Fold you can make use of Samsung’s Trade-In mechanism where you can get cash-back from Samsung when trading in your older smartphone, tablet or notebook.

You can get a rough estimate of how much you’d get at this URL which we recommend visiting before you purchase your new phone.

For those purchasing the Fold5 on contract, Samsung says that all major networks will have options available starting at R699 per month for 24 months.

Those that pre-order the foldable can expect shipments to start on 11th August giving early adopters earlier access to the smartphone.

With Samsung targeting a younger demographic with this release it remains to be seen if a premium brand can compete in what has fast become a sea of foldable smartphones.
