Remastered Oldboy hits local cinemas on 16th August

  • Next month the original Korean neo-noir action film Oldboy will land in local cinemas.
  • It will be screening at a handful of Ster-Kinekor cinemas across the country, as well as two independent movie houses.
  • The remastered version of Oldboy celebrates the original film’s release 20 years ago.

When it comes to cult classic action films of the past couple of decades, few can come close to the original Korean neo-noir Oldboy. For South African fans of the film, it is set to screen in local cinemas as part of a 20th anniversary come 16th August.

“South Africa will release the fully restored and remastered version of the film, now available, 4K simultaneously with the rest of the world on 16 August 2023,” a press release sent to Hypertext confirmed.

In terms of the actual release, the number of cinemas that will be screening Oldboy is rather limited. To that end, a handful of Ster-Kinekor locations have been earmarked for next month, along with two independent operators.

The cinemas set to show Oldboy on 16th August are:

  • Ster Kinekor – Rosebank Nouveau,
  • Ster Kinekor – Brooklyn,
  • Ster Kinekor – Sterland,
  • Ster Kinekor – Eastgate,
  • Ster Kinekor – Gateway,
  • Ster Kinekor – V&A,
  • The Labia – Cape Town,
  • The Bioscope – Johannesburg.

At the time of writing, none of the above locations have recommended pricing available for tickets, or indeed the ability to book for one of the screenings, but those should both change as we get closer to the 16th August release.

Regardless of cost, however, if you enjoy cinema, Oldboy comes highly recommended by the Hypertext team, for what it matters. If you’re wanting to follow up your Barbenheimer experience with something equally good next month, this is it.
