• Samsung has revealed the retail price and availability for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5, its latest clamshell foldable, available locally from 25th August 2023.
• With increased front screen size and a far smaller hinge, the new device is all about pocketability and trendy living.
• It costs a hefty R29 999, with pricing varying depending on the storage of the model of choice.

At its Galaxy Unpacked event held on 26th June 2023, manufacturer Samsung has revealed its new Galaxy Z Flip5 smartphone, the next iteration of its Z Flip series of clamshell foldable devices.

Unlike the Z Fold, which is the flagship foldable for Samsung, the Z Flip is the more affordable experience for those looking to get into foldables. For the Z Flip, Samsung is targeting the younger crowd and are looking to wow Gen-Z with increased pocketability, improved selfie-taking capabilities and accessories like the new theme-changing near-field communication (NFC) cover slides.

Another improvement for the Z Flip5 over its predecessor, is the larger size of the front screen. At a media-only event before the Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung told us that the new larger front screen on the Z Flip5 would mean that the entire phone can be used without flipping it open.

Whether or not this defeats the purpose of a foldable smartphone awaits to be seen as reviews start trickling in. More widgets, like weather and for chatting, will also be heading to the phone to take advantage of the larger screen size in the front.

Another improvement is a much smaller hinge, which produces a barely noticeable front crease at the folding point. But otherwise, the Z Flip is all about lifestyle, while the Z Fold brand continues to push on the hardware front.

It will launch alongside the Z Fold5, the Samsung Watch6 and Watch6 Classic, and a new lineup of Samsung Tabs. All of which are heading to South Africa.

In terms of the Galaxy Z Flip5, it will be open for pre-orders locally on 11th August 2023 until it hits generable availability in South Africa on 25th August 2023.

Retail price for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 is R29 999 at all local retailers, partners and Samsung branded stores. But prices will vary depending on the storage capacity selected. It will be available in the colourways of Graphite, Mint, Cream and Lavender.
