Samsung launches Watch6 & Watch6 Classic

  • Samsung has launched its latest smartwatch series at the Galaxy Unpacked event on Wednesday.
  • This is the Watch6 and its more tradional-looking sibling, the Watch6 Classic.
  • The devices comes with larger screens, and improvements to sleep and fitness tracking.

While foldables were the main event at Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event on Wednesday, the South Korean tech giant also unveiled other devices, including a new series of tablets, and a new series of smartwatches.

This the previously highly leaked and much rumoured Samsung Watch6, and the Watch6 Classic, which are some of Samsung’s largest wearables yet in terms of sheer screensize.

The Samsung Watch6.

Samsung says it has improved its sleep tracking for the Watch6, as well as its fitness tracking, like new exercise modes and step monitoring. There are more health insights available than previous generations, and a new fall detection mode where if you take a stumble while wearing the Watch6 it will bring up a screen where you can send messages to emergency contacts.

This feature could be important for older individuals, or children, or even people who work in dangerous jobs and environments.

While we don’t have any detailed specifications of the Watch6 yet, like performance hardware or battery capacity, we can tell you that its screen has seen an upgrade in terms of size and fidelity compared to the Watch5 before it.

The Watch6 Classic goes for a look reminiscent of a more traditional chronometer, sporting a stylised silver face.

Meanwhile the Watch6 Classic has many of the same features as the base Watch6 but returns to the stylised more fashionable route, with a silver-like bezel which gives it an air of tradition especially when coupled with a theme that shows watch seconds, minutes and hours hands.

Samsung wants all of its products to fit into an “ecosystem” meaning that they have features across two or more devices. For example, at an event for the media leading up to the Galaxy Unpacked show, Samsung showed off how you can position the Galaxy Z Flip5 upright in flexed mode, and then take a picture using the Watch6 while you are standing away from it.

Landing in South Africa soon, the Watch6 and Watch6 classic will be slightly more affordable than their predecessors, with the Samsung Watch6 going for R6 999 and the Watch6 Classic for R8 999 at participating retailers and Samsung branded-stores.
