SARAO seeks engineers for 2024 scholarship programme

  • SARAO has issued a call for those studying or planning to study a Bachelor in Engineering.
  • The scholarship is worth R118 500 and applications close on 30th September.
  • Successful applicants will need to complete their degree or risk having to pay back the funds they have already used.

The South Africa Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is looking to sponsor the tuition fees of prospective engineers.

The SARAO Bachelor in Engineering Technology Scholarship is available to South African citizens who are 24 years old or younger and wish to study – or are currently studying – toward a Bachelor in Engineering Technology: Electronics, or a Bachelor in Engineering Technology: Mechanical.

Applications are currently open and close on 30th September.

The scholarship is worth R118 500, but SARAO is willing to adjust this figure in consideration of university fee increases and inflation.

As part of the application, prospective students will need to include answers to three questions namely:

  • “What is engineering?
  • The attributes you think are most important for an engineer?
  • The work of SARAO and why it needs engineers?”

We should point out that per a document penned by SARAO, if you receive this scholarship and then fail to obtain your degree or drop-out of university, you will need to pay SARAO back for the funds that have already been used.

You can read all the details about the scholarship at this link.

This could be a fantastic opportunity for those interested in space exploration and astronomy. SARAO, which is operated by the National Research Foundation is responsible for all radio astronomy initiatives and facilities including the MeerKAT Radio Telescope, and the Geodesy and VLBI activities at HartRAO.

The organisation also helped design and manufacture ventilators used during the COVID-19 pandemic.

If engineering isn’t your field of interest, we recommend bookmarking this page to keep an eye out for future education and training opportunities.
