htxt.africast – Password sharing set to be pay-to-play?

The africast returns this week, and while we are a member short (quick recovery Luis), the topic of discussion potentially affects millions of people who enjoy watching content on streaming platforms, and more importantly the perk of password sharing with others so they can access too.

Before that, however, we’re rounding up some of the biggest news and reviews of the past week.

First up is internet connectivity in South Africa, which has been impacted by damage to the West Africa Cable System (WACS) and the South Atlantic 3 (SAT-3) cables. Thankfully, unlike a similar incident in early 2020, service providers are switching over to alternatives like the Equiano cable.

“Last year Liquid Intelligent Technologies acquired a fibre pair on the cable giving it up to 12 Terabits of capacity, this capacity is surely coming in handy now with two cables down for the count,” wrote Brendyn Lotz.

Next is a review of the OPPO Reno10 Pro+ 5G smartphone, which happens to the company’s latest flagship offering for South Africa. Delivering a solid experience and well specced in pretty much every category, the only thing holding back the phone is its price tag.

“The problem that the Reno10 Pro+ finds itself with is that at R21 999, it is in the same price bracket as the Samsung Galaxy S23. While that phone was launched earlier in the year, this new device is still not on par with its specifications or performance,” explained Robin-Leigh Chetty in his review.

As for the meat and potatoes of this latest africast, we unpack some of the thinking from Disney+ when it comes to addressing password sharing, noting that the position that the streaming platform finds itself in is quite to that of Netflix. Either way, it seems like customers are the ones taking the hit.
