MTN introduces eSIMs for prepaid smartphone customers

  • MTN South Africa has launched its eSIM solution for prepaid customers.
  • Customers can visit an MTN store to activate their eSIM for a range of smartphones.
  • Unfortunately eSIMs for prepaid customers is currently restricted to smartphones.

MTN South Africa has today announced that prepaid customers can pick up an eSIM just like post-paid customers have been able to since 2019.

An eSIM is, as the name suggests, a digital version of a SIM card. Unlike the physical card, the digital version is baked right into a smartphone, tablet or wearable. Unfortunately, MTN South Africa says that for now prepaid customers can only get an eSIM for smartphones.

“We launched the eSIM functionality to our postpaid customers in 2019 and we are proud to now lead the way in introducing the eSIM functionality to our prepaid customers. This launch is a testament to our dedication to meeting evolving customer needs and providing the most convenient, flexible, and connected experiences,” says Thabiso Msimanga, general manager for Customer Experience, Strategy and Design at MTN South Africa.

Some of the benefits of MTN SA’s eSIM is the ability to have multiple eSIMs on one smartphone, as well as being able to easily switch devices without fumbling with a card.

The network operator says that it will bring support for eSIMs in wearables at a later stage.

“The expansion of eSIM functionality to prepaid customers is a significant milestone that empowers our customers with unmatched connectivity, convenience, and security. We are excited to embark on this journey and bring our customers a new era of seamless digital experiences,” concludes Msimanga.

MTN customers can visit their closest MTN store to activate an eSIM.
